Natalie Lamb and the career advice of a Chief Executive

I recently had the opportunity through my International Water Association membership to join a webinar with Rosie Wheen, Chief Executive of WaterAid Australia, to find out more about her career. Thank you very much, both for Rosie for talking to us, and to the IWA for organising such a meeting.

Here are my personal take home message from that dialogue.

  • Find opportunities and seize those opportunities
  • Be clear about what you are interested in (or not interested in)
  • Do not be afraid to volunteer
  • Push yourself into uncomfortable environments to best adapt and learn
  • Imposter syndrome is normal and even happens to Chief Executives
  • A strong network of people you trust is important- people may say it's lonely at the top but it doesn't have to be
  • Articulate your interest in opportunities to managers and people around you
  • Ask someone you admire about how they got to where they are
  • Even someone as successful as Rosie meets with a mentor outside of her organisation every 6 weeks
  • It's going to be OK. You've done enough. Your best is enough.
  • Give yourself time to celebrate your achievements
